The release of Dr. Dre’s long-awaited Detox album has become an urban legend of sorts, but it looks like fans will have to buckle down and wait a little longer—or a lot longer— as the West Coast veteran admits that he wants to take a break from the studio. FaderTV caught up with Dre at the opening of his first Beats By Dre store in Soho, New York where he revealed plans to take a hiatus after completing his work with Kendrick Lamar and Slim the Mobster

Fans hoping that the Aftermath boss will finally unleash his third and final album Detox (nearly 11 years in the making) won’t gain any solace in the news that Dr. Dre wants to take time off. When Dre wraps up executive producer duties on releases for his protégés Slim the Mobster (who just released the street album War Music) and buzzing Compton MC Kendrick Lamar, Dre told Fader he’s shutting down shop for a spell.

“These are the next two artists I’m working on, Slim Da Mobster and Kendrick Lamar. I think that’s when I’m gonna just wrap it up for a minute because I’ve been working on music for 27 years now and the longest I’ve ever been out of the studio in 27 years has been two weeks,” Dre said. “So yeah, I feel like I’m gonna take a little bit of a break. I’m never gonna stop music, it’s like air to me.”

No shocker here, but Dre did not mention a timetable for Detox, although earlier reports state that Slim the Mobster, Kendrick Lamar and former protégé Snoop Dogg have all contributed to the project.
